It started with Teen Bop and TeenVogue. Sitting for hours cutting out words and images to decorate my notebooks in school with. The love of this technique sort of disappeared after high school - I mean who does this as a job? When we started Cork and Chambers in 2015 and began working with couples to plan weddings in 2016, I realized that this technique served a purpose in this creative business of ours. See the flow of flipping though magazines is mindless. I don’t look for words or specific pictures anymore. It allows me to see past the clioent-provided Pinterest images and get deeper into a sense of of their vision. I search for images that connect to the vibe, mood, feeling and textures that they are dreaming about for their wedding day.
I LOVE doing this process and its a mini mural of their day - a feeling captured in scraps. It really eliminates my sense of copying and opens up channels of creativity. It helps me see shapes I never thought of, or combinations that offer a play off of each other. To get back to my roots and deep dive a little more (hopefully monthly), I thought of designing a mood board for each month that tells a story.
The feeling of this month is freshness meets cozy. January is a time when a lot of people shed old, past challenges and start new with a clean slate. Some of the colors that offer this are the whites, stone and greenery that come through. This airy, lighter feeling allows room to breathe with openness for new opportunities and projects. At the same time, some of the darker, wood and patterns are hinting to a more cozy, grounded environment that allow for rest and relaxation. It is interesting to see the juxtaposition of these two feelings as January offers both a month for planning and new mixed with hibernating and wrapping yourself in a warm blanket.
Some things that I am noticing in this scheme are the golden pops of color and abstract textures of the linens that are peeking through. There are the clear contrast of dark and light - maybe symbolic for this time period too.
I am noticing a lot of lines. While some are horizontal and geometric, some offer a more of a curve and feminine touch.
In my reflections of this mood board, I find it to be an interesting duality between:
It seems appropriate for January to have these feelings bundled into one month. There is this clear pull toward a period of resetting and resting. The feeling that you’re on the cusp of something new, but not quite ready to jump in full steam ahead.
